I was a wife and 26 year old mother of two boys in 2009 when I was diagnosed with cancer. My oldest son was 4 and my youngest was just 8 months. I had not been able to recover from my second pregnancy and was getting sick all the time. I went to several doctors to try and pinpoint what the problem was and they all dismissed my concerns saying I was just overly tired from taking care of two young boys. It took literally five different trips to different doctors before several lumps were discovered on my neck, lumps that I might add I had not previously noticed because I was so busy with life, my family and all the other responsibilities I had as a mom. A really important side note here for everyone out there would be to pay attention to your body especially changes no matter how small or insignificant they may be. Had I followed this advice I may have caught my cancer a whole lot earlier.

The doctor sent me for an ultrasound followed by a biopsy. On August 28, 2009 I was diagnosed with stage three thyroid and lymph node cancer. In one instant with one phone call my whole world had changed. I was actually on a girl’s weekend standing in the middle of a 7-11 when I got the call. I had a long drive back home from my weekend trip and did a lot of thinking and by the time I pulled in my driveway I had decided one thing for sure that I was Not going to have surgery right away or have any sort of chemo or radiation. I prayed about it and will tell you that I think for the first time in my life I was 100% sure of the path I was meant to take. I decided to defy everything the doctors were telling me to do and embark on the path less traveled and guess what I had no reservations and never once second guessed this decision, never once in five years. I had such a sense of peace after I made the decision to go natural and really just had to put it all in God’s hands and trust He would see me through this road block.

My first order of business was to do a drastic diet change and by drastic I mean I threw everything in my house out and started over. Because my cancer was in my thyroid and surrounding lymph nodes my TSH was really high 48.64 and doctors were insisting that I get on thyroid medicines to control it. They were telling me that no one could control TSH that high without medicines. I refused and hit the ground running.

Aside from my immediate family I did not have a ton of support as I am sure my venturing into uncharted waters scared many people and some people even outright told me I would die if I just ate food to heal cancer. None the less I continued on. I was my own biggest advocate and would basically walk in the doctor’s office and tell them what scan I wanted done and when. We were on an agree to disagree basis and as my tumors shrank and blood work was steadily heading to the normal range they never praised my success or admitted perhaps there was something to all my healthy eating. Throughout my journey I used a combination of juicing, yeast free diet and Chinese herbs and supplements to fight my cancer. I might also add that different combinations of food and supplements will react and produce different results in every individual.

One thing I was told at diagnosis in 2009 was that I would never be able to carry any more children with my blood levels out of control and my refusal of conventional treatments and medications. I think one of the highlights of my journey was the day I got lab and ultrasound results back saying that my TSH went from 48.64 down to 4.0 with NO medication and my tumors were considered to be in remission. In December 2012 I gave birth to baby boy number three and words cannot describe how blessed and full of love my heart is now. Ironically after a five year battle with cancer I had my thyroid removed 8 months after the birth of my third baby due to secondary reasons. Pregnancy hormones had enlarged it and it was restricting breathing and swallowing.

Today I am cancer free. I did not use any chemo or radiation or other drugs. I am studying nursing and will go on to get a degree in holistic medicine. My life is anything but ordinary. I am an advocate for natural healing and want to help people understand the power food has in our lives. I have shared my journey with several groups on both a large and small scale. I started a Facebook page where I share tips and recipes that helped me battle thyroid disease and cancer and can be applied to everyone’s life:

I have learned to let the little things roll right off my back and I really live and love every moment in life. Having cancer has given me a whole new appreciation for anything life throws my way!
